Dr. Albert Hape was known as the "Dare Devil Dentist", along with Professor, Samuel A. King became the first locals to go up in a hot air balloon on December 10, 1869. An article reported the event on December 11th. Dr. Hape made two attempts, taking off in his hot air balloon from Stone Mountain (DeKalb Co., GA) and Tallulah Gorge (Habersham Co., GA).
Though known for his handsome appearance and romantic temperament, he never married.
Dr. Albert Hape's brother, Dr. Samuel Hape would later be the founder of Hapeville, GA (near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport).
