KOOSHAREM, Sevier County - Soren Marenius Sorenson, 72, former Sevier county assessor and Koosharem mayor, died Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at his home in Salina after a lingering illness.
He was born Nov. 16, 1877, at Nesby, Denmark, a son of Ole C. and Karen Christensen Sorenson. He and his father came to the United States when he was five years old as converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They settled at Ephraim and a year later his mother and three sisters joined them.
In 1883 they moved to Koosharem, where he had lived until five years ago. He lived at Richfield for five years and moved to Salina a week ago.
He married Sarah E. Manwell Jan. 16, 1900 in the Manti LDS temple.
He was a farmer and a civic leader, served as mayor of Koosharem for 2_ years and as county assessor from 1930 to 193_. He was president of Sevier Farm Loan Assn. for several years and was also manager of the Sevier Valley Co-op.
He filled a mission for the L D S church in Denmark in 1912 and he was a Sunday school teacher for many years. He and his wife observed their golden wedding anniversary Jan. 16, 1950.
Surviving are his widow, and 10 of his 12 sons and daughters: Orrin L. Sorenson, Manti; Ole M.
Sorenson, Victorville, Cal.; DeLoyd and Ivan Sorenson, Koosharem; Lee Sorenson, Provo; Mrs. Ruth Ewles, Salina; Mrs. Merrill (Mercedes) Budge, Prove; Mrs. Boyd (Ruby) Smith, Orem; Mrs. W. L. (Sylvia) Hill, Monroe; Mrs. Arvard (Nora) Anderson, Richfield; and a number of grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Koosharem L D S ward chapel by Leland DeLange, bishop. Friends may call Saturday afternoon at the Neal S. Magleby mortuary in Richfield and at the home of Ivan Sorenson at Koosharem Sunday after 5 p.m. and Monday prior to services.
