Grand Island Times October 16, 1891
The salute fired in honor of Bishop Scannell of Omaha at Posen church in Howard County on Wednesday, resulted in the death of John Cinoway. Young Cinoway was helping to load a small cannon which was discharged permaturely, tearing both hands off and badly mashing his head and body, one rib being torn from the socket. Life lasted only fifteen minutes. What was intended as a happy church affair was suddenly turned into a funeral and has cast a gloom over the entire community.

Clara Grudzinski Cynova Journal Entry - About Alex Cynova
"Father was killed by a cannon which was being shot at intervals for the Bishops arrival, while it was very hot another bag of gun powder was put in by his father and it exploded instantly killing him at once. His other children Mary, John, and Frank was with him. His last words were to his children "go to grandma"(Cynova). Andrew and Alex were home with his mother."
