John Barnhill Corbaley was the Grandson of Richard Corbaley, an Irishman who immigrated to the US during the Revolutionary War. His father Jeremiah was one of the earliest settlers in the state of Indiana.

John was born on a farm in Wayne Township, Indiana on August 18, 1827, the fourth of 10 children.  Little is known about his early life, except that he grew up helping his family on the farm in Indiana.  John's father died when John was 16, and his mother carried on with the help of John and his siblings.

On May 23, 1850, at the age of 22, he married Eliza Ann Pendergast, aged 17.Eliza was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the sixth of nine children. When Eliza was nine, her family migrated to Wayne Township, Indiana, and it is there she and John met.

John and Eliza set up house on the Corbaley farm with John's mother Jane, and 5 of his siblings. Their first child, Mary, was born April 1, 1950 and survived only two months. After Mary came two sons, Enos born May 30, 1851, and Francis M."Frank" (born Christmas Day in 1852).

Life was hard for early settlers, and in 1858, Eliza died at the young age of 24, leaving behind two young sons, aged 5 and 7. A year after her death, John married Priscilla Susan "Long" Smith, a widow with a 4 yr old son by the name of AlfredLong.

By 1860, John and Priscilla had established their own farm, and over the next eight years, had three children of their own, Rebecca "Jennie", Vincent M. and Margaret S.

John's widowed mother Jane, died in 1869, and about six years later, John and Priscilla and their four children moved West to Crescent Township, Iowa where he acquired about 200 acres of farmland. John's son Enos and wife Mazie soon joined them, and about six years later, son Frank and wife Julie also moved to Crescent.

In 1890, at the age of 63, John moved out to California with his family and settled near San Miguel, a farming community in San Luis Obispo County, on the banks of the Estrella river.  There, John planted 25 acres of fruit trees.  He also grew vegetables and melons which he sold at a local market.

John's Grandson Harry soon got the California bug and moved out west to help his grandfather. There he met and married Lillie Smith, a young woman from Paso Robles. Harry's brother Frank became a minister with the Seventh-day Adventists and he and his family were sent to Indiana to minister.

John died in 1901, just after his 74th birthday. He was buried in the San Miguel District Cemetery.   His wife Priscilla lived ten years more, and following her death on February 25, 1911, was buried alongside her husband.
