James "Edward" born about 1862 MO. (The 1880 census of Union County, Washington, shows Edwin Surber, 19, born in Missouri, in the household of James Mc Alister. The 1920 census of Warm Springs Township, Deer Lodge County, Montana shows a resident, Ed J. Surber, age 63, born in Missouri about 1857. Online Montana Death Records lists Ed Surber, age 64, born in Missouri about 1861 and died February 4, 1925 in Deer Lodge County, Montana. It is believed that all three of these records refer to the son of Charles and Tabitha Surber.)

Charles served twice in the Civil War on the Union side--62nd E.M.M--1862, 1864. According to information on the Internet, the family crossed the plains in a covered wagon in mid-1860's. It also shows that Charles died in Union, Union Co., OR on December 13, 1867. It seems likely he may be buried in Union Cemetery.

After Charles' death, Tabitha married Ambrose Johnson in Union Co., OR on July 27, 1868. They relocated to Dayton, Columbia Co., WA, where she died in 1930.
