Caroline Surber, daughter of Jacob and Nancy Waggoner Surber, was born in Virginia. She moved with her family by covered wagon to Missouri about 1842. Family records show that "she remembered that the girls rode inside the wagon while the boys walked along side the wagon. If the girls looked outside, the men would snap the whip for them to get back inside."

Caroline's first marriage was to George Anderson in 1849 in Macon County, Missouri. They had one daughter, and all three appear in the 1850 census of Macon County. Some time after the census George went west in search of gold and died somewhere along the way. After George's death, Caroline married John Wesley Varns on November 6, 1860 in Macon County, Missouri. Three children were born to this union.
