Henry Alfred Allen
Henry Alfred Allen, 74, who has been in business in Massena for the past 46 years, died at his home on the Maple street road, town of Louisville, at 12:40 o'clock Monday morning. Mr. Allen had been in declining health for the past year and his condition had been regarded as serious since a week before Thanksgiving.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. Maynard P. Beach, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of this village, conducted the last rites and burial was made in Pine Grove cemetery.
He is survived by the following nieces: Mrs. J. B. White, of Montreal, Mrs. Reginald Short, Massena, and Mrs. John Finn, of Rutland, Vt.; also one nephew, Ethan Allen, Massena.
He was born August 31,1858, in a log house in the Allen settlement, which was located in the eastern end of the town of Louisville and on what is now known as the Riley cross road. His parents were Aaron and Melvina Davenport Allen. He attended schools in Louisville, went
to the old Massena academy and then to the Ives seminary in Antwerp. He was also a graduate of the Oswego State Normal, one of the, first normal schools in the state.
Mr. Allen and Arthur E. Nichols went into partnership and bought and sold hay 46 years ago. This firm continued for ten years and then Mr. Allen and his brother, Ethan W. Allen, operated the business until 11 years ago. In the early days, the firm dealt in hay but this part of the business was discontinued about 19 years ago. Lumber was added 26 years ago
and coal 18 years ago. When Mr. Allen started in business 46 years ago, the office was located on Phillips street and remained in that location until the new building was constructed on Andrews street in 1916. Although he has been in business for 46 years he has been in only two locations.
The early histories of St. Lawrence county state that Aaron Allen and his two sons moved from Vermont to Louisville in 1800. They accompanied Nahum Willson, Aaron Allen and son, Ethan Allen, were great-grandfather and grandfather of Henry A. Allen. The elder Mr. Allen and Mr. Willson each took up a farm and commenced clearing immediately. A crop of corn was raised and in the fall they sowed wheat. The Allens were from Vermont but had resided
in Ogdensburg.
