born to Adam Murray and Elizabeth Beattie. Shepherd at Lan(g)shawburn. Married to (1) Janet Little (2) Esther Cowan.
(Note: The OPR birth entry for John appears to be in error. This whole section of the OPR appears to have been copied or rewritten in about 1810 and a single entry gives details for the births of three sons of Adam Murray showing Margaret Hutton as the mother of all three. This cannot be the case for John as the linked headstone for Adam Murray in Castleton Cemetery shows Margaret as having died in 1773/5 meaning that John was more probably the son of Adam's second wife, Elizabeth Beattie - as implied by this gravestone at Eskdalemuir.)

Elizabeth BEATTIE late spouse to the late pious and much respected Adam MURRAY who lived and died at Castleton She departed this life at Lanshaburn 14 September 1819 aged 78 years. Likewise Janet MURRAY daughter to John MURRAY shepherd in Lanshaburn who died 30 April 1812 aged 4 years and George MURRAY his son who died 30 June 1823 aged 10 months. Esther MURRAY his daugter born at Lanshaburn 12 August 1826 died 30 August 1836 also the said John MURRAY who died at Langshawburn 1 April 1849 aged 70 years also Esther COWAN his relict who died at Langshawburn 4 August 1856 aged 75 years
