Henry V. Smith, son of Nathan& Elizabeth "Betsey" (Sharp/Scharp) Smith, married Caroline Burgett, dau of Moses Pietersen & Chastina/Stinche(Sharp/Scharp) Burgett/Burghardt, 27 Jan 1853 in Van Buren Co., IA.

1862 Cooke Co, TX: Henry was one of the 37 during the Civil War that was sentenced to be hung by the Rebels as a Northern sympathizer and escaped only thru the influence of a family friend, Joshua Gorham. Henry killed by Indians 8 May 1866 on The Sauce Ranch 5 miles from Laredo towards Eagle Pass while shearing sheep.
Also killed were Maj. H.P. Darling and Thomas Cosser. All three buried on ranch.

Caroline is buried Valley View Cem, Cooke, TX
Henry & Caroline were 1st cousins.
