Henry was a preacher. Immediately after the Civil War, he and his bride, Rachel Ann Mapes, came to Republic County, Kansas, where they were among the very first homesteaders. Henry (as he was known) spent most of the next 35 years in Republic County and raised a family there. After Rachel Ann's death in 1899, Henry and his sons moved to Abilene. He married Rachel Catherine (Palmer) Adams in 1900. Soon after their marriage, they moved to Oklahoma (recently opened to settlement,) where Henry served as a minister to homesteaders in the area of Payne County.
