Nathaniel was one of eight children born to William and Rachel Mapes Willoughby, his siblings are Charlotte, Cora, Martha, William, Joseph, Homer, and Vernon.
Nathaniel married 1st, Katie Branstetter, November 1911, they had a daughter Vera. Nathaniel married, 2nd, Elizabeth Nelson on February 7, 1920, they had three children, Nathaniel, Olive, and Verna. Nathaniel and Elizabeth divorced, but remarried on March 2, 1935, in District of Columbia.
Nathaniel Gerald Willoughby was born in Republic County, Kansas, near the little village of Cuba, he spent most of his younger years in Republic County. Nathaniel's father was a preacher as well as a farmer, so church activities were as much a part of family life as the farm was. After Nathaniel's mother died in 1899, his father moved to Oklahoma with the two children who were still at home, Nathaniel and his brother Vernon. Nathaniel joined the U.S. Army in 1901 and had a long and honorable military career having reached the rank of Staff Sgt. at the time of his death, on February 4, 1936, at Post Hospital, Fort Totten, near Bayside, in Queens County, New York.

Nathaniel is my 7th cousin 2X removed.

Thank you to the person from the Veteran's Affairs who provided Nathaniel's background and found most of his family's memorials.
