Dewitt Clinton McCrory was born at Edwards, St Lawrence Co, New York, on 26 Apr 1838. He was the son of William G. McCrory and Esther Ormsbee. He served with the 95th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, enlisting in 1862 while living in McHenry County, Illinois. After his discharge, he settled in Wright County, Minnesota. He moved his family to Oregon in 1892. He was commonly called D. C. D.C.'s wife was Louisa (maiden name Gennett) McCrory. She was also born in New York in about 1842, and followed D.C. to Oregon from Minnesota with their son and daughter in 1892.
Daughter Ida May died in 1903 in Oregon.

Dewitt Clinton McCrory died at the age of 73, at the home of his son near Shaw. [SML 30 Nov 1911] The 1895 Marion County Census shows the McCrorys living at Shaw, as was Herbert McCrory, age 20, who was born in Minnesota.
