Mary Jane Garlick Hatch - Excerpts from history written by Mary Jane's daughter, Susan Helquist, and by Sophrona Helquist, Mary Jane's grand-daughter.

Mary Jane Garlick was the third child of David Garlick and Elizabeth Buck. She was born 12 August 1822 at Providence, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Other children in the family were, Hannah, Susannah, Talith Cuma, Joseph Gasten, and Sarah Elizabeth. The family was Pennsylvania Dutch.

Mary Jane was a beautiful young woman with chestnut brown hair and dark brown eyes and a very robust complexion. She was a strong, robust, healthy young woman.

Mary Jane's first husband was Isaac Burres Hatch, Sr. (1823-1853), They were married September 14, 1845 in Lee Co., Iowa. Their children were George Andrew (1847-1910), John William 1850-1932, and Isaac Burres, Jr. (1853-1904).

After the untimely death of Isaac, Mary Jane moved to Springville, Utah, where she met and married Francis Lawrence. They moved to Payson, Utah where Francis was killed in an accident while working to settle the area. He was pulling a load of logs when his horses were startled by Indians and ran away, killing him. In the Spring of 1858, Mary Jane married Isaac's brother, William Henry Hatch. He was glad to be able to assist in caring for his brother's children, and he provided well. William and Mary Jane had three children: Susan Permelia, William Henry and Louisa Ann.

In 1875 they moved from Utah County to Koosharem to help settle that valley. She died at 78 years of age.
