Mary Jane was the daughter of James E. and Nancy Jane Dunlap Davis.

"Mary Jane Davis was born in Harrisville, Venango County, Pennsylvania, December 27, 1847, the first of seven children given to James E. Davis and Nancy Jane Dunlap Davis, died December 28, 1924 at her home in Hamburg. In 1853 the Davis family turned their faces westward, for a few years they lived in Wisconsin and about 1859 moved to Batchtown, making this County their home. October 3, 1865, Mary Jane Davis was United in marriage to Matthew Granger, to this union two boys were born who, with her father, preceded the deceased and death. On March 24, 1874, she became the wife of William P. Fowler, who died April 16, 1903. To them were given two daughters, Addie M., and Ella J. grandma Fowler experienced all the difficulties of the pioneer of the antebellum days and saw Calhoun grow from the day of the ox wagon to the present. Except the last 20 years most of her life was spent in the vicinity of Batchtown. For nearly 7 years she had been an invalid, the result of an accident on the Fuller Hill some years before. She leaves to mourn, two daughters, Addie M. Day, wife of John Day, Jr., and Ella F. Day wife of Joseph Day both of Hamburg Illinois, three stepchildren, Arthur D. Fowler, Jerseyville, Illinois and Mrs. Mary E. Davis, Drumwright, Oklahoma, and two sisters, Mrs. Orpha Watson, Batchtown Illinois, and Maria L. Batchelder, Alhambra, California. December 30, a short service was held at the home by Rev. J. P. Tucker and the funeral services were conducted at the M.E. Church, Batchtown Illinois by Rev. Bryant, assisted by Rev. Tucker, after which all that was mortal was laid beside her husband in the Wilson cemetery."
