Melva M. Wendel, 90, died Tuesday, August 18, 1998 at Western Palins Regional Hospital, Dodge City.

She was born March 29, 1908 in Edwards County, KS the daughter of Dennis and Pearl (McGinty) Batman. She moved to the Gray County area from Edwards County in 1921. She was a homemaker and taught school in Gray County.

She belonged to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and Altar Society, Ingalls.

On October 13, 1928 she married Martin Joseph Wendel in Garden City. He died February 8, 1989 at Cimarron.

Survivors include 3 sons, LeRoy and Charles, both of Ingalls, and Donald of Sallisaw OK; 2 daughters, Alice Scott, Cimarron, and Margaret Schiffner, Ensign; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ines Thomas, a granddaughter, and a great grandaughter.

Vigil wake service will held at the church at 7:30 PM Thursday. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM Friday, Aug. 21 at the church with Fr. Gregory LeBlanc presiding. Burial will be at Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City.

Friends may call from noon to 5:00 PM Thursday at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron, and from 7:00 p.m. Thursday to service time Friday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Gray County EMS, in care of the funeral chapel.
