Oliver Nelson (Nick) Edwards, 70, of Jena, and president of the LaSalle Parish Police Jury, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, 1988, at the M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas, where he had been a patient since mid-December 1987.

He was a retired businessman and public servant in LaSalle Parish for the past half century. Mr. Edwards served as alderman for the Town of Jena for 8 years before being elected mayor, an office he held for 12 years, giving it up to become postmaster at Jena, for about six and a half years. He was later elected to the LaSalle Parish Police Jury where he served 12 years, and last fall was re-elected to a fourth term on the Jury.

Services were held at 11:00 a.m. last Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Jena with Revs. John Ed Snell and Mack Walker, officiating.

Burial followed at the Jena Cemetery under arrangements by Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.

He is survived by his wife, Neva Breithaupt Edwards of Jena; two sisters, Mrs. Matilda Crooks of Jena and Mrs. Ada Lee McDonough of Tyler, Texas.

Pallbearers were Frank Doughty, Earl Doughty, Herman Williams, Jena Alderman James Hodges, Juror Virgil Terral, Sheriff Wayne McGuffee, Judge Jimmie C. Peters and Allen Fortson.

Honorary pallbearers were Drewett Smith and members of the LaSalle Parish Police Jury.
