James H. Crichlow was Murfreesboro's postmaster from 1893 to 1898. He was Murfreesboro's mayor from 1900 to 1909. He was instrumental in building Murfreesboro's first high school in 1917 on Maple Street. The Crichlow Grammar School was named after him. He was a member of numerous fraternal organizations, including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of which he was elected Grand Master in 1882.
James Henry Crichlow and his wife Emma Lane were the parents of three children:
Laila Irene Crichlow (1875–1958) m Charles Martin Cason;
Newton Collier Crichlow (1880–1970) m Martha Louise Quarles;
Helen Mar Crichlow (1882–1964) m Hewitt Frost Earthman.
