Bertha Horning, 79, of 1605 Southwood Ave. died at 2:36 p.m. Friday in the University of California Irvine Medical Center while on vacation. Born Nov. 2, 1905, in South Bend, she was a lifelong South Bend-area resident. In South Bend on July 17, 1926, she married John Horning, who died on Sept. 27, 1983. She is survived by four daughters, Mary C. Mrozek of Irving, Texas, Mary K. Fields and Betty Crosiar, both of South Bend, Susanne Beliview of Las Vegas, Neveda; three sons, Donald N., James A., and John II., all of South Bend; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, Circle of Mercy, Christ Child Society and the Assemblers Club. Mrs. Horning was past president of Beta Mu Chapter of Delta Theta-Tau. She also was past president and current board member of the St. Joseph's Medical Center Woman's Auxiliary and a board member at the Family & Children's Center.
