John A. Horning, 79, of 1605 Southwood, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday in his home after a lengthy illness. Born on June 24, 1904 in Mishawaka, he was a lifetime area resident. In 1922, he joined the Peltz Kaufer Paper Co. as an accountant, where he became president in 1937. Then in 1951 he left the firm to form John A. Horning Associates, an industrial sales organization serving Indiana and Michigan where he was president until retiring in 1978. On July 17, 1926, in South Bend, he married Bertha C. Peltz. She survives along with four daughters, Mrs. Mary C. Mrozek of Irving, Texas, Mrs. Susanne Beliview of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mrs. Mary K. Fields and Mrs. Betty Ann Crosier, both of South Bend; three sons, Donald N., James A., and John II., all of South Bend; 25 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Evelyn Horning and Mrs. Geraldine Hennion, both of Mishawaka; and a brother, Francis A. Horning of South Bend
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, with Rev. Robert A. Yast, pastor, officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Hickey Funeral Home. A fourth degree knight, he was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 5521, the Catholic Order of Foresters, Elks Lodge 234, Moose Club, South Bend Rotary, Society of Manufacturers Agents Inc., and the Citizens' Historical Association. He was in the "Who's Who in Indiana" in 1974. He attended St. Joseph College, Rensselaer, the South Bend College of Commerce, and Indiana University at South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Child Society or to St. Joseph's Medical Center
