Alfred was born the oldest child of John Franklin and Sarah Isabelle West Hogg. He was the oldest of 10 children and the oldest brother of my fraternal grandfather Frank Leroy Hogg. They grew up in the late 1800-early 1900's in Oregon, Washington and Idaho when the country was still the old west. They grew up ranching, breaking wild mustangs, raising hay and livestock and at least three of the five boys performing in the rodeo circuit.

This family's life was like something out of the movies of the Old West. They all remembered riding with Yakima Canutt, Ben Johnson and other rodeo stars that went on to become stunt men for Hollywood. All placed frequently winning money and prizes including two of them taking home saddles as first prize.

Alfred was married four times but only had two children, an infant that was stillborn and a daughter, they named Clara Bell, with his first wife Elizabeth "Lizzie" McDonald.

He was admitted to the Eastern Oregon State Hospital in Pendleton, January 1949, spent 2 months and 25 days there until his death due to a perforated duodenal ulcer. His remains were autopsied and cremated against family request. Ashes given to his two youngest brothers which were taken to Union, Oregon and buried in the Union Cemetery near his parents and the infant he and Lizzie lost at birth on June 7, 1914.
