He and his younger sister were brought to Oregon by their father from Missouri when John was 10 and Sarah was 3. Their mother died on the trip so did not make it to Oregon. Father, John Baker Hogg, boarded the two children out when he arrived in the Oregon Territory and he had no wife to care for them. He never remarried and eventually moved on into Canada after his son became of age. John Benjamin Franklin married had 10 children, ranched and was a stock farmer as well as freighting product and supplies for the sheep men and the beef ranchers.
