Although Eli's Cass County Death Record (Liber A, p. 56) states that he was born in "Sandusky, Wyandott County, Ohio", Wyandot County, OH, DID NOT EXIST until 1845, so Eli could not have been born in that county. Wyandot County was formed in 1845 from Marion, Crawford, Hardin and Hancock counties.
It is thought but not proven that Eli, Alexander and William D. Young(s) are brothers. The Newberg Township U.S.census reports for the three men consistently say that they were born in OH of parents born in PA, but those parents have not been identified. We do have specific evidence that Eli and Alexander are brothers. According to Cass County, MI, Deeds, on December 31, 1864, they bought 80 acres together, the east ½ of the northeast ¼ of section 23, Newberg Township, from John and Abby Drummond of Constantine, Michigan, for $225.00, Eli taking the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 23 and Alexander taking the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 23, giving each man a homestead of 40 acres (Cass County Deeds, Liber 30, p. 139). This became the permanent home of Becky (Fredricks) and Eli Youngs. In addition, Alexander's son, Jonathan "John" Youngs, is listed as a resident of the home of the widowed Becky Youngs for the 1880 US Census in Newberg, where he is described as "a nephew".
According to his daughter, Anna Rebecca (Youngs) Miller, Eli had a "lung condition" which kept him from serving in the Civil War and led to his early death from what his Cass County, MI, Death Record calls "lung fever". As a young man in his early forties, he must have known his health was precarious, because he did leave a Will expressing his final wishes to his wife and children.
