Barbara Iris Corpening Rost

Granite Falls, N.C. - Mrs. Barbara Iris Corpening Rost, 80, of Granite Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at The Shaire Center after a brief illness.

She had taught school in Anchorage, Alaska, Hickory and Granite Falls. In addition, Mrs. Rost was a librarian at Granite Falls Middle School.

Born Nov. 30, 1927, in Granite Falls, she was the daughter of Dr. Oscar J. Corpening and Alice Surles Corpening.

Mrs. Rost received her early education in Granite Falls and was a graduate of St. Mary's College in Raleigh, Duke University, University of Washington and Appalachian State University.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by sisters, Adelaide Stewart Corpening, Elizabeth C. Farmer and Sara S. Corpening; and brothers, Jimmie Corpening, Dr. Albert E. Corpening, Dr. William N. Corpening, Robert B. Corpening and Gene S. Corpening.

Mrs. Rost is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jean Rost of Granite Falls; a sister, Mary W. Corpening Duckworth and husband, William, of Asheville; brothers, Dr. Joseph D. Corpening and wife, Jean, of Salisbury and Dr. Thomas N. Corpening and wife, Shirley, of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Mary Watson Corpening Duckworth and husband, William, of Asheville and Avis S. Corpening; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Rost was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Granite Falls, where she served as a teacher in the Ladies Adult Class. She was also a 25-year member of the Omicron Educational Sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa.

The funeral service for Mrs. Rost will be conducted by Dr. Robert B. Evans Jr. at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at First Baptist Church in Granite Falls. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Mackie-High Funeral Home.
The services will conclude in Pinecrest Cemetery for the interment.

It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to First Baptist Church, Family Life Center, P.O. Box 507, Granite Falls, N.C. 28630 or South Caldwell Christian Ministries, 5 Quarry Road, Granite Falls, N.C. 28630. Mackie-High Funeral Home is serving the Rost family.
