Obituary
Stephen Atkinson
was born in Broomside, county Durham, England, Dec. 3, 1845, he being one of 14 children. He was married October 26, 1872, to Miss Frances Wright, of Tom Law, England. To this couple were born ten children, five of whom preceded the father to the spirit land. One half of the family have now crossed the flood.

He came to America with his family and settled at Springfield, Ill., July 27, 1878. He afterwards lived in Leavenworth, Kansas, and still later in Cherokee, where he died. Of the sixteen members of his father's family nine are now living, eight of whom, seven brothers and one sister, are in this country, and one sister in England. All the other members of the family have deceased.

Stephen Atkinson was a harmless, inoffensive and good boy during his boyhood. The same characteristic marked his manhood and thus he became a man of many friends. In earlier life, while yet in England, he attached himself to the Primitive Methodist church, in one of which churches he was for some time violinist. Since his residence in this country he has not been a member of any church, but very recently was much concerned religiously, and as he assured the writer had begun again a life of prayer. The few days immediately preceding his death seemed to be full of sunshine. During this time he was constantly singing, "I am happy on the way."

He died at 8:45 o'clock, January 21, 1888. He is gone. May guardian angels watch over his wife and children.
