Believed to be the son of Josiah N. Alexander.

He was united in marriage to Sarah Ann Ridlen on November 9, 1853, St. Louis, Missouri. They removed to Tennessee (1860 Census) for a while where two of the three children were born: Franklin Edgar Ridlen and Cora (Alexander) Webb.

They returned to Illinois (War Record & 1870 Census) where he enlisted on August 15, 1862 as a private. He was mustered into Company F, 110th Infantry Regiment Illinois on September 11, 1862. He was mustered out on June 8, 1865.

Following his service, they had another daughter born to bless the union, Laura May (Alexander) Beaty.
