ELIZABETH - Lawrence Clyde Cale, 81, of Elizabeth passed away the morning of July 1, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Mr. Cale was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Parkersburg, the son of the late Lawrence Cecil and Faith Fieck Cale. He was a farmer in Wirt County for more than 60 years. He was co-owner of Mingo Bottom Golf Course, served 23 years on the Wirt County Board of Education, 18 years as president. He was a member of the Wirt County Farm Bureau and the 1961 winner of the state farm soil conservation award. He played fast-pitch softball for 20 years and coached for 20 years in Elizabeth.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Virginia Ice Cale; his children, Donald Merle Cale of Jacksonville, Fla., Betty Louise Gildow of Lower Salem, Lawrence Clyde Cale Jr. of Hickory, N.C., Steven Wayne Cale, Richard Eugene Cale, Mary Helen Whipkey and Anne Elaine Boyce, all of Elizabeth; a sister, Jean Egbert of Palestine; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Watson; a grandchild, Joshua "Duke" Cale; and a son-in-law, Ronald Gildow.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Elizabeth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ray Whitemen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens of Parkersburg. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home of Elizabeth and prior to the service at the church.
