Irene Allen Thompson, 96, widow of Walter James Thompson Sr., died Friday, April 27, 2007, at her home.

Born in Dunn, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Walter F. Allen Sr. and the late Bessie Memory Allen.

She was a member of the First Southern Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 60 years. She was a member of the Southern Methodist Missionary Society. She was a faithful employee of the Pinewood Manufacturing Company for 20 years.

Survivors include four sons, John L. Thompson and his wife, Susie, of Greenville, Thomas Preston Thompson and his wife, Sandra, of Sumter, Franklin Smith Thompson of Sumter, and Charles Robert Thompson and his wife, Gloria, of Sumter; four daughters, Betty Irene Prescott of Sumter, Ruth Richburg and her husband, J.B., of Sumter, May Lineberger and her husband, Robert, of Columbia, SC, and Kay Sprowls and her husband, Richard, of Lexington, SC; a brother, Walter F. Allen Jr., and his wife, Ruth, of Sumter; 19 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Walter James Thompson Jr. and William Edward Thompson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2007, at First Southern Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ellison L. Evans III officiating.

Burial will be in the High Hills of Santee Baptist Church Cemetery on Meeting House Road, Dalzell, SC.

Pallbearers will be her six oldest grandsons, Jimmy Thompson, Rex Prescott, Stephen Abbott, Thomas Thompson Jr., Charlie Thompson Jr., and Richard Sprowls III.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 3190 McCray's Mill Road.
