Mrs. Elizabeth Bartholomew Bown, one of Fayett's respected pioneers, and who had resided in the valley for many years, passed away peacefully at her home in Fayette early Sunday morning. For some time she had suffered with jaundice, and this, together with her advanced age, is given as the cause of her passing. Members of the family were at the bedside when the end came.

Mrs. Bartholomew was a true native of Utah, and was born at Springville, July 25, 1854. She passed her 80th birthday Wednesday of last week. Mrs. Bown was the daughter of Joseph and Polly Benson Bartholomew. When she was but six years old she came with her parents to Gunnison and lived for a time at what was then known as Hog Wallow. During this time the Indian war was raging and high officials of the church called Joseph Bartholomew and James Mellor, together with their families, to create a settlement at Fayette. Mrs. Bown was among the many to forestand the hardships of the pioneer life in settling the village at that time, but she was alert and did much in uplifting the weary and lonesome.

She was married to William Bown in the old Endowment house at Salt Lake City, March 3, 1878. In her early childhood she joined the Mormon church and had always lived faithfully to her religion.

Besides the husband, William Bown, she is survived by ten children, as follows: W. E. Bown and Leo Bown of Provo; Mrs. Ellis Pritchett, Gunnison; Mrs. William E. McKell, Short Hills, New Jersey; John Bown, Milo Bown, Lenard Bown, Miss Ella Bown, Mrs. Lillian Bartholomew and Elton Bown, Fayette, and one sister, Mrs. Mary K. Metcalf, of LeGrande, Ore. She was grandmother to thirty-seven grandchildren, thirty-four of which are living, and two great-grandchildren.

A loving tribute was paid Mrs. Bown when the last sad rites were held for her Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. Services were at the family home and were attended by many sorrowing friends. Words of comfort were spoken for those left to mourn the loss of a wife and mother. Musical numbers by the choir and a profusion of beautiful floral offerings tended to make the last rites for the kindly friend and neighbor deeply impressive.

Burial services were held at the Fayette cemetery.
