Biography...
Nathaniel's first trip to California was made in 1849 by sea around Cape Horn, South America, during the Gold Rush days in Calif.; he mined gold in Placer, Butte, Lassen, and other Counties along the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Returning to Mo. in 1851 via Isthmus of Panama, Gulf of Mexico, and the Mississippi River. He left Independence, Mo., Apr. 1852, with his family of wife and 2 sons, in ox-drawn covered wagons across the plains to Calif. Their long 6 months journey was ended Oct. 1852 in Sonoma Co., Calif.

Nathaniel was the 1st County Accessor Of Sonoma Co., he held this office for a number of years.

The move to Sonoma Co. was followed by a move to Marin Co., where 6 children were born. A 600 acre ranch in San Luis Obispo Co. on Old Creek was the next move of this large family, a distance Of 300 miles, taking 4 weeks time with many large wagons of belongings, horses, and cows, crossing the San Francisco Bay on flatboats, arriving Oct. 1869. So life began again on Old Creek, where a large house, big brick dairy barn, huge horse barn were soon built; they were kept busy making cheese and butter, and a lot of farming. The last 3 of the 16 children were born here, Creed, Hugh and Jake.

Finding the burden too great to operate the ranch, it was sold; Nathaniel and his remaining family moved to Paso Robles in San Luis Obispo Co., Calif., Aug.1, 1889. 'The doors of the Great Beyond were opened ' and on August 13, 1889, a very great man and father passed through.

The following was taken from the book written by Benjamin Floyd Nuckolls;

Nathaniel Nuckolls, son of Robert G. Nuckolls and wife, Margaret Swift, moved to Missouri in 1845, married Sarah Ann Finn (Fine); from there he crossed the plains, and was a miner in California; found gold, came back to Missouri and moved his family in wagons to California, and settled there. One of his sons, Clarke, was born on top of the Rocky Mountains, on the journey to California. There were sixteen children born to them, and all settled in California.

From my own extensive research I found the following;
** his statement about Clark being born in the Rockie Mountains is incorrect. Clark and his brother Nathaniel were the two sons that Nathaniel returned for and that he and his wife traveled to California with.
It was their third child, Margaret, who was born on that trip.
