Elizabeth was the sixth of nine children born to Sarah and John Oxford. She and her siblings accompanied her parents when they migrated from Ohio to Vermillion County on the west central border of Indiana about 1824.

On 16 Feb 1827, Elizabeth married George Nichols and they had four children before he died on 4 May 1835. The children were Nancy, John, Joseph and William.

Elizabeth married David Rush, a widower who had two young children, on 8 Nov 1840. The family of six increased when Elizabeth and David had a son, Melvin.

By 1854, the Rush family and families of Elizabeth's brother, Elias Oxford, and sister, Mary Oxford Moots, had moved to Butler County, Iowa.
