CALVIN THEODORE "TED" HIGGS, SR., 89, Lt. Col. USAF Retired. One of thirteen children, born in Conway, AR, and raised in Burneyville, OK. Ted is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise Jones Higgs. Mr. Higgs received his BS in Geography from Memphis State University and Masters in Education from Peabody College where he also taught. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He successfully completed advanced flying training and achieved jet qualifications while stateside. Most of his flight hours were in cargo transport planes including the C-47, but he transitioned to the F-86 and F-100 jets and participated in the planning of the F-105. He flew mostly in North Africa but also in Asia and Europe. He and his family were stationed at Silver Springs, MD, where he taught courses including ROTC at the University of Maryland; Chitose Air Base, Hokkaido, Japan, where he was operations officer and was promoted to Lt. Col.; Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina; and George AFB, Victorville, CA. He obtained numerous campaign and service ribbons during his military career. After his retirement from the Air Force, he taught with the Memphis City Schools System at Oakhaven and Hillcrest High Schools. He was predeceased by his daughter, Loretta Higgs. In addition to his wife, Louise, he leaves Calvin T. Higgs, Jr. and his wife, April, of Lexington, Kentucky; George Higgs of Cordova, Tennessee; Don Sparks and his wife, Grace, of San Jose, California; and a surrogate daughter, Sharon Higgs. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 12 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 13 at 3 p.m. in the South Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home.
