Earlier in his life Ellis signed his surname Schimmelpfennig and later on after he had children his surname was changed to, Schimelpfenig. He was not the only person in Washington and Oregon to make this name change. His family seemed to have made this change as they were born. His WWI Draft card uses the old spelling.
