Moses Starr owned land in the Northwest part of of Section 35, Lynn Grove Township, Jasper Co., Iowa, April 24, 1848, when his claim was made. Born in Virginia in 1787, but moved to Ohio when quite young. There he engaged in mercantile persuits. In 1839 they moved to Iowa. In 1853 the Starr family started the long and perilous journey across the plains. Ox and horse teams furnishing the motive power. When they reached Dalles Oregon, Moses was taken ill and soon after reaching Clackamas he died. Saddened and bereaved thought she was, Elizabeth took his place at the head of the little band and lead them to there destination in Benton Co. Oregon. There she took up a Donation land claim of 160 acres. She improved her land and made a home. Her ability as a physician was of unusual order and many a sick room was brightened by her presence. She lived to the age of 79.
