GREENSBORO — Louis Wilson Silver, war hero, 93, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2008.

There will be a funeral service at noon on Friday, October 10, at Beth David Synagogue, 804 Winview Drive, Greensboro, followed immediately by interment at the Durham Hebrew Cemetery in Durham.

Born in Durham on Valentine's Day, 1915, he was the second youngest of eight children: two brothers and five sisters.

Mr. Silver was a wrestling champion at Durham High School. He attended one year of Duke University, then enrolled in the Army so he could serve his country in World War II. A Tech Sgt. in Company B of the 50th Signal Battalion attached to the VII Corps, Mr. Silver's tour of duty lasted 39 months with no furlough. His battalion was part of the Invasion of Normandy. He was also proud to have participated in the first Jewish prayer service held on German soil since the beginning of World War II.

Mr. Silver married Sylvia Drexler of New York City in 1951; they remained married for 55 years, until her death in March 2007. The couple moved to Graham, N.C., where Mr. Silver owned a small food market for a short time, then settled in Greensboro where he worked for Southern Plate and Window Glass Company. He remained with Southern Plate for the rest of his career, except for a short time when the family moved to Charlotte. In 1973, Mr. Silver purchased the company and owned it until he sold it upon his retirement.

Mr. Silver was one of the first members of Beth David Synagogue, and a long-time board member. He was very active in numerous synagogue activities and a vital member of the congregation. He was a proud member of the Eno Lodge of the Freemasons in Durham, N.C.

Beloved by his family and many, many friends, Mr. Silver is survived by his loving and devoted children, Robert (and his wife, Rhonda) and Jacquelyn (and her husband, Daniel); his caring and supportive brother, David (also of Greensboro); his dear sister, Pat; five adoring grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
