He was a Farrier (Blacksmith) with Company F of the 8th Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War.

He enlisted on 24 Jun 1863 from the town of Iconium, Appanoose County, IA.

Peter was the son of John Talkington, Jr. (1790-1872) and Mary Helmick Talkington (1794-1904).

On 30 Aug 1849 he married Sarah Mariah Ely Talkington (16 Jun 1830-8 Apr 1858). She was the daughter of Samuel Ely (26 Mar 1803-6 May 1870) and Catherine Whisman Ely (17 Apr 1805-4 Apr 1867).

Their four children were Lafayette (27 May 1850-17 Nov 1938), Samuel Elliott Talkington (3 Jun 1853-21 Jan 1910), Sarah Catherine Talkington Elgin (1857-) Annie E. Talkington Curtis (22 Jan 1852-29 May 1880).

On 27 Aug 1861 Peter married Martha Jane Childs (24 Oct 1843-14 Jun 1914).

Their five children were; George Montgomery Talkington (28 Aug 1863-18 Jun 1957), William Harvey Talkington (22 Sep 1866-7 Apr 1938), Elzora ‘Dora' Talkington (26 Sep 1868-14 Jun 1943), Jesse Lanstin Talkington (1 Jul 1871-14 Jun 1943), and Ottie Odora Talkington (8 Dec 1873-30 Jul 1963).

He was discharged from the army on 13 Aug 1865 at Macon, GA and filed for an invalid pension (#576298) on 9 Jun 1886.

His civilian jobs were blacksmithing and farming. He died of apoplexy at the age of 69.
