Asa was the 5th of 13 children (2nd son) born of Asa Kinne (1723-1802) and his wife Bethiah (Bethia) Kimball (1724-1805). Asa's siblings were: Sarah (1744-1746), Joseph (1747/8-1778), Lydia (b. 1750), Bethiah (1755-1843), Jacob (1757-1813), Sarah (1759-1834), Olive (b. 1761), Abigail (1762-1765), Hannah (1763-1809), Aaron (b. 1764), Jonas (bp. 1765), and Mary (Betsey) (b. abt. 1769).

Asa married, December 31, 1772 at Preston, New London County, Colony of Connecticut, Thankful Bellows (1756-1785) by whom he had at least 6 children (4 sons and 2 daughters): Stephen (b. 1773), Abigail (b. 1774), Hannah (b. 1778), Jonas (1780-1822), Daniel (b. 1782) and Zenus .

About June 12, 1775, Asa entered military service, at Preston, New London County, Connecticut, as a volunteer in a Company then under the immediate command of Preston's Lieutenant Nathaniel Gove. They marched to the camps around Boston and took post at Roxbury about July 1, 1775 and served during the seige of Boston until the expiration of their ultimate term of service, December 1775. In early July, 1775, Lieutenant Gove's command was assimulated into Captain Joseph Jewett's 8th Company, Colonel Jedidiah Huntington's 8th Connecticut Regiment. Most of the Regiment was stationed on the Long Island sound until September 14, 1775, when it was ordered to the Boston Camps and took post at Roxbury in General Joseph Spencer's Brigade. Asa was discharged from his term of service, December 3, 1775.

On January 3, 1777, Asa was commissioned an Ensign by the Governor of Rhode Island and served in Captain Benjamin West's Company, Colonel Joseph Stanton's Rhode Island Regiment. Asa joined the Regiment at Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island and serve one year and three months. He left this service in April 1778.

In October 1778, Asa moved to Hebron, Charlotte (now Washington) County, New York.

In 1779, Asa was called out in three alarms and served in Captain Munson's Hebron Company, of the Charlotte County Militia. He served in 1779, in the whole about one month, at Skenesborough (now Whitehall) in the same county.

In 1783, Asa moved from Hebron to Rupert, Bennington County, Vermont. After his 1st wife died, Asa married, October 26, 1790 at Rupert, his 2nd wife Mary Polly Colton (1758-1846) by whom he had at least 5 and possibly 7 children: Polly (b. 1792), Kenas (1793-1856), Hannah, George Rex, Lyman (1795-1878), Bethia (b. 1798), and Washington (1801-1815).
