Albert Juhnke, a Hall county resident for over a half century and very well known in this community, passed away at the St. Francis hospital at 10:05 p.m. Saturday after a brief illness. About a week ago he underwent quite a serious operation and for several days thereafter he appeared to be withstanding the same satisfactorily. Due to his advanced years, however, and the resultant shock which sapped his vitality, he grew gradually weaker and weaker, resulting in his demise late Saturday.
Mr. Juhnke was born in Manchester, Mass., on March 15, 1857 (sic), being aged 66 years, 10 months at the time of his death. With his parents he moved to Knoxville, Tenn., in 1865. In 1871 the family left Tennessee by wagon for Chicago, Ill., where they resided for two years, coming to Nebraska in 1873. The father located on a homestead five miles west of Grand Island in Hall county and here Mr. Juhnke resided for a number of years, later engaging in farming for himself in that vicinity. Though he never married, he was extremely fond of children and never missed an opportunity to extend benevolences in their behalf. He was of a kindly, conscientious nature which won for him a host of friends and admirers.
Surviving him are a brother, A. L. Juhnke, residing at Burkett, Nebr., three step brothers, Charles Grothe, of Wayne, Nebr., John Grothe, of Woburn, Mass., William Grother, of Concord Junction, Mass., and a half-sister, Mrs. Millard Cornelius, of Alda, Nebr. A sister, who died while young, and a half-sister, Mrs. William McLellan, have preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held from the home of James McLellan, two miles west of Grand Island on Tuesday, at 2 p.m., Rev. Glen Rice, of the Presbyterian church officiating. Members of the I.O.O.F. lodge will have charge of the services at the grave. Burial will take place in the Grand Island cemetery. It is requested that there be no flowers.
