George Washington Gaumer was raised by Levi Shirar and his aunt Celinda (Allbaugh) Shirar, and was always considered the brother of the Shirar children. George's mother, Elizabeth Allbaugh (younger sister of Celinda Allbaugh)died in childbirth. His father, Peter Gaumer, was the nephew of Lydia (Gaumer)Shirar.

George had a full sister Rebecca Matilda "Gaumer" Maxwell,and half siblings ,Charles Gaumer b. c 1859 Lydia "Gaumer" Long b. c 1862 ,Elizabeth Gaumer b. c 1864,Sarah Gaumer b. c 1867,Henry C. Gaumer b. c 1869
