On July 10, Robert Francis Aultman enlisted in the U.S. Navy through the recruiting station in Selma, AL and was immediately sent to San Diego, California for training, Fireman 3rd Class Aultman was stationed at the Naval Air Base at Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides Islands (now Vanuatu) in the South Pacific where he was reportedly a member of a ship repair unit. Espiritu Santo was the first advance base built by the Seabees to support the Allied efforts in the Pacific. It was used by the army, air corps, coast guard and the marines as well as by the navy.

Fireman 3rd Class Aultman died on July 12, 1943 as the result of an accident.
