Ancient Hearse Is Used for Funeral

A horse-drawn hearse, used Monday to convey the body of Sylvester Crum, Civil war (sic) veteran, to Pleasant Hill cemetery (sic), made its first appearance on the streets of Belleville in four years. The cemetery, one of the oldest in the county, is three and a half miles southeast of Belleville. The horse-drawn hearse and eight wagons and teams were used for the funeral procession from Dry Bridge to Pleasant Hill. Rapid thawing Monday made the road impassable for motor cars from US 81 and the procession was transferred from motor to horse-propelled vehicles at Dry Bridge. The old-fashioned hearse was a request made several years ago by Mr. Crum, and road conditions resulted in the fulfillment of his final wish. An American Legion firing squad conducted the
funeral with military honors.
