John Donald Akins, 51, died Thursday afternoon in bulloch Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was a native and life-long resident of Bulloch County and was a former teacher and principal for the Bulloch County Board of Education for 20 years. He was the owner and operator of John's Country Store in Portal, and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Edenfield Akins, Portal; his mother, Mrs. Bertis Akins Deal, Statesboro; a sister, Joann Smith, Portal; and a brother, Jimmy Akins, Statesboro.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Hubert Tankersley officiating. Burial will be in Upper Lotts Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Active pallbearers will be nephews.
