Mrs. May Gwyn Ashby died at her country home, Idle Wild, on Piper's Gap Highway at 7:25 am Wednesday after a long illness.
She was the widow of Lafayette William Ashby, founder of Ashby Insurance Agency. Following his death in 1947, she was in charge of the business until retiring because of ill health.
She was born May 27, 1895 in Surry County, the daughter of Richard L and Leitia Hollingsworth Gwyn. She graduated from Greensboro College in 1916 and was married to Mr. Ashby in 1927. She was a member of Central Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. T.D. Gillian of Statesville and Mrs. W. R. Simpson of the home, two brothers, Joe R Gwyn of Winston Salem and Richard R Gwyn of Mt Airy, 10 nieces and nephews.
