From the book "Old Gravestones of Putnam County, New York", by Barbara Smith Buys (Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1975): "This is the g-g-g-g-g-grandmother of the complier (Barbara Smith-Buys). Sarah was born in Eastham Mass., daughter of Benjamin Higgins and Sarah Freeman whose g-grandfather was Gov. Thomas Prence and g-g-grandfather was Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower. Jesse Smith removed to North East, Dutchess Co. where the inscription on his gravestone in the Spencers Corners Burying Ground reads "Mr. Jesse Smith, d. June 14, 1782, ae 82". Lt. David Smith, their son, is referred to in "The New York City Water Shed Plot". (See Jesse Smith, His Ancestors and Descendants, by L. Bertrand Smith, Frank Allaben Genealogical Co., New York, 1909)."
