Nettie E. Hulst, 101, of Salem, died Saturday.

She was born in Westfield, N. D., and moved to Salem in 1924. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church and was one of the first women to serve as Deaconess. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher and member of the Church Circle and Missionary groups.

She volunteered with the Red Cross, YWCA Budget Shop and Meals on Wheels. Her husband, Bert, died in 1959.

She then moved to Iowa where she was a housemother at Parsons College. She returned to Salem 10 years later.

She enjoyed handicrafts and growing African violets.

Survivors include her daughters, Cornelia Adams of Orinda, Calif., and Jeannette Onffroy of Salem; sister, Lena Jongsma of Oak Harbor, Wash.; brother Will Abrahamse of Oak Harbor; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Barrick mortuary. Private interment will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Contributions: Willamette Lutheran Foundation or Presbyterian Board of Deacons.
