Obit TH Monday 8-27-1934 2/7: John O'Rourke died Sunday at home, 468 Burch St. after a long illness. Born Dubuque 1-9-1865, eldest of 7 children of John and Elizabeth B. Hickey O'Rourke. Bereft of his father at an early age, he began his career in the grocery business. Later associated with John Mehlhop and Sons, one of the largest wholesale businesses in Dubuque. After the senior Mehlhop's death the firm was dissolved and John became affiliated with Prudential Life Ins. Was the local district manager for 30 years. Prominent in St. Vincent de Paul for many years. Was a member of the city council for several years. Married Ellen Flanagan of Austin, Minnesota in May 1895. She survived with children Gerald E., San Diego; Nrs. Charles J. Schrup, Mrs. Roy P. Fifield, St. Louis; John Jr. Chicago; Dorothy, Lorraine and Virginia, Robert E. Thomas E. and Mary Eloise at home. Also survived by one brother Edward J. and 2 sisters, Misses Mary G. and Honor of Dubuque. Funeral Wednesday from Cathedral to Mt. Olivet. Funeral notice TH Wednesday 8-29-1934 12/6: Msgr. Thomas Conry and Rev. F.A. Mullin of Columbia College were in sanctuary. Pallbearers (active) were: James C. Clapp, Walter Gifford, Frank Tisser, Arthur Reh, P.J. Crowley, Gus Giunta, E. McFadden and Carl Mehlhop.
