Born the youngest of 10 children, Mary Eloise O'Rourke Pohlad was raised in Dubuque, Iowa. She received her degree from Mundelein College in Chicago. In late 1946, Eloise and Carl Pohlad met on a blind date attending a college football game between Minnesota and Iowa. They fell in love and married five months later, on April 22, 1947. They had three sons during their 56-year marriage -- Jim, Bob and Bill.
In addition to her husband and three sons, Eloise Pohlad is survived by daughters-in-law, Mary, Becky and Michelle, and grandchildren Tom, Joe, Chris, Alexandra, Charles and Katherine
"The word I'd use to describe Mom is grace," son Bill Pohlad said. "In everything that she does, with everyone she meets, even in facing difficult situations, like her recent health problems, she always has been gentle, loving and graceful.
"She is, in our eyes, the perfect wife and mother."
Eloise Pohlad spent much of her life involved in charity work, including the Boys and Girls Club, WAMSO, the Carondelet HealthCare Foundation and the Twin Cities Opera Guild. She was a founding member of the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministries Foundation and the Pohlad Family Charities.
In 1991, Carl and Eloise Pohlad founded the Twins Community Fund as an independent public charity designed to lead the team's community work. Since it began, the fund has contributed more than $1 million each year to providing expanded recreation and education opportunities for young people across the upper Midwest.
The family said Eloise also enjoyed the simpler pleasures of life like eating ice cream, doing the laundry and ironing, spending time with her sons and their families, and attending Twins baseball games.
"Mom was originally a football fan, but she grew to love baseball after Dad bought the Minnesota Twins," said son Jim Pohlad. "She has become one of the Twins' biggest fans, attending hundreds of games over the years."
"Over the years, Eloise's passion and excitement for Minnesota Twins baseball inspired all of us in this organization to strive to be the best," the Twins said in a statement. "From the first pitch of Spring Training, to the final out of the World Series, her cheers were always the loudest. The ballpark just won't be the same without Eloise Pohlad."
