Cliffie Dubberley was born December 8, 1882, in Armstrong community in East Macon County, Alabama to parents, John Allen Dubberley and L. D. Dubberley (nee Bufford). Her fraternal grandparents were Sacker Nathaniel Dubberley and Elizabeth Ann Dubberley (nee Awtry). Her maternal grandparents were James Jeffries Bufford and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Bufford (nee Bedell).
She was a stenographer in the court system of Birmingham, Alabama. It was there that she met her future husband, James Everett Ray, a young lawyer, a graduate of the University of Alabama law school, and a member of the Alabama Abstract Company of Birmingham.
Cliffie and James were married at the home of her parents, by the Reverend James W. Glenn on September 24, 1908, in Macon County, Alabama. They returned to Birmingham where their only son, James Dubberley Ray, Sr., was born in 1911. Cliffie's husband died February 19, 1912, only a few short months after their son was born. Cliffie remained in Birmingham for many years after her husband's death. She ultimately returned to live with her parents in Macon County, Alabama.
She was known in the Armstrong Community as Dittie. Dittie was actively involved in the community and most particularly the Armstrong Methodist Church where both sides of her family were members for several generations. She was the first woman surveyor for the Cotton Survey Allotment Progam with the USDA in Macon County, Alabama. She was the Stewardess in the Armstrong Methodist Church for over fifty years and Citizen of the Year in Macon County, Alabama in 1952. She served on the Rationing Stamp Board in Macon County during World War II. Dittie was also actively involved in the Macon County Home Demonstration Club.
