He was three years old when his father's family came to the United States. He was nearly fifteen when his father died. They lived not far from Winslow, Illinois, which is one-half mile from the Wisconsin State line. His young pals were largely Wisconsin boys and he enlisted as a private with Company B of the 5th Wisconsin Battery, 3rd Birgade, 3rd Division, 14th Army Corps, Sherman's Army. His was the Wisconsin Light Infantry that marched with General Sherman to the sea. He enrolled on December 24th 1863 to serve three years or the war's duration; was discharged on June 6th 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin. Having enlisted at Monroe, Wisconsin. He was in his "18th year" not yet 18, when he volunteered - so he stretched a point. Freinds told his mother that she did not have to let him go at 17 and she firmly announced that she would never tell anyone that a son of hers had lied. She would let him go to war first. He was five feet nine and one-half inches tall without shoes. He had gray blue eyes, fair skin.

Civil War Soldier, School teacher, farmer.

Married Melissa Amira Macomber January 1, 1873, Stephenson County, Il.
