In 1902, when she was eleven, her father and stepmother, Della Lorena Manning, moved the family from Richmond County to a farm in Buie, Burnt Swamp Township, Robeson County. Edith is found with the family in the 1910 US Federal Census under the nickname "Etta". In later years, she was known as Edith.
By 1920, she had returned to live and work in Rockingham, Richmond County. She boarded in the Hinson household and worked as a stenographer. In 1930, she was a lodger in the Thomas household. Her occupation was secretary in a cotton mill.
Edith married businessman Henry Marvin Smithey on 14 September 1933 at the home of her sister Martha in Charlotte. Edith and Marvin lived on Everett Street in Rockingham, Richmond County. He was manager of Belk's Department Store from 1929 until his sudden death during emergency surgery in 1954. They had no children. Edith never remarried.

Mrs. Henry Smithey
ROCKINGHAM -- Mrs. Henry Marvin Smithey of 208 Everett St., Rockingham died Tuesday in the Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. She was the daughter of the late Alexander C. McLeod and Mrs. Ida Bennett McLeod of Richmond County.
She is survived by four sisters, Mrs. W. C. Matthews of Charlotte; Mrs. R. D. Holderfield of Portsmouth, Va.; Mrs. C. W. Harwood of Raleigh; and Mrs. Joseph Maliawski of Willingboro, N.J.
Funeral services will be Friday at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Rockingham. The Rev. A. P. Hill Jr. and the Rev. Joe Burnette will officiate. Burial will be in the Eastside Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be her nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Watson-King funeral home Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
