His Obit read:
DAVID TOLAND PASSES AWAY
Death of a Highly Respected South Tama Pioneer at Toledo
Last Thursday evening at his home in Toledo David Toland, after an illness of several months duration, passed away, aged eighty-five years, three months and twenty-nine days. He had made his home in Tama county for nearly thirty-nine years, coming here in the spring of 1865. During all those years his life was such as to commend him to his neighbors.
He was a man of sterling integrity, of good ability, and consequently he became influential in Columbia Township where for so many years his life was spent. Sixteen years ago he retired from the farm which had been his home for nearly a quarter of a century, and moved to Toledo where he continued to reside until the final summons came. The writer of these lines who knew Mr. Toland so intimately for many years regards his death as a personal bereavement and a great loss to his family and to the community in which his last years were spent. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor of the deceased, Rev. C. C. McKinney, from the Presbyterian church in Toledo.
Mr. David Toland was born in Beever county, Pa., August 4, 1818. He moved from his birthplace with his parents when but four years of age to Ohio. At the age of 18 he professed his faith in Christ and united with the Presbyterian Church. On Dec. 23, he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Merrick who died in Toledo, June 18, 1901. To this union nine children were born, consisting of eight boys and one girl. Seven children survive him. On Dec. 23, 1891, Mr. and Mrs. Toland celebrated their golden wedding and lived a married life for nearly sixty years when Mrs. Toland died.
